Solutions for a greener Tacoma will be presented at the first-ever “Tacoma Green Infrastructure Challenge” Finals Event and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, March 5, from 4-7:30 p.m. at University of Washington Tacoma, Philip Hall (1918 Pacific Ave.).

Attend this event and see the brightest design teams from around the Puget Sound showcasing their outgoing vision for green infrastructure in your area. These top teams consist of a well-rounded mix of local firms, sustainability committee members and students from four universities. Concepts from each team will be delivered in six-minute presentations to the challenge jury, as well as fellow competitors and spectators. Jurors will select the winning team in each of three categories to receive a $5,000 cash prize and trophy.

The competition was launched late last year, with local design/engineering firms invited to form teams and develop concepts for up to three real-world sites, sponsored by public entities in Tacoma.

  • The City of Tacoma is sponsoring a green roadway in the South Tacoma Way business district.
  • The Port of Tacoma is sponsoring an industrial redevelopment site.
  • Metro Parks Tacoma is sponsoring an urban redevelopment of the SERA Athletic Fields.

The public is also invited to vote on the design boards created by each team. Voting will start online Wednesday,Feb. 25. Visit the event website for more details. The posters will be featured at the event with voting continuing until 5 p.m. March 5.

The awards ceremony is free to anyone attending the Vision2Action Sustainability Symposium.  Interested individuals are encouraged to register jointly to attend both events. The cost to attend the awards ceremony only, is $10.  For more information, including registration and event details, visit cityoftacoma.org/tgichallenge.
